As the first modern university established and one of the two national universities in Vietnam, VNU has undergone various stages of development: the University of Indochina established on 16 May, 1906; Vietnam National University (November, 1945); the University of Hanoi (June, 1956). In December 1993, VNU was reorganized on the basis of amalgamating the University of Hanoi and some other leading universities in Hanoi.

VNU is the largest comprehensive higher education and research center in Vietnam. VNU is entrusted with the task of producing highly qualified human resources and talents for the industrialization and modernization of the country. VNU holds a special position in Vietnam’s higher education system, operating according to a special regulation promulgated by the Prime Minister. VNU reports directly to the Prime Minister and has high autonomy in personnel organization, academic programs, scientific research and technological development, planning and finance, international relations and other fields. VNU is entitled to work directly with ministries, ministerial level organizations, governmental bodies, people’s committees of central cities and provinces on affairs related to VNU. VNU's universities, schools, and institutes maintain their juridical entity status as higher education and scientific research institutions regulated by the Law on Education and the Law on Science-Technology.

Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) was established in 1995, currently one of the two leading national universities in Vietnam with more than 90,000 students and nearly 400 professors, associate professors as well as more than 1,100 PhD. VNUHCM is one of the largest educational institutions in Vietnam with 7 member universities:

  2. VNUHCM - University of Science;
  3. VNUHCM - University of Social Sciences and Humanities;

  5. VNUHCM - University of Information Technology;

The training program of VNUHCM includes the following fields: natural sciences, social sciences, engineering and technology, economic management - law, health sciences and agricultural sciences... with three level of Degree: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate.

With a vision to be a top university system in Asia, VNUHCM has been ranked among the top 200 universities in this continent for many consecutive years by Quacquarelli Symonds Asia. Since 2021, VNUHCM has maintained its position in the top 801-1000 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

VNUHCM has international cooperation with universities of many countries around the world, not only in the ASEAN but also with prestigious universities in North America, Europe, Australia and East Asia, ... In addition, as a multi-disciplinary university with long history and tradition, VNUHCM has extensive cooperation with many international organizations; embassies; funds and NGOs, regional and international higher education networks such as AUN, AUF, SATU, etc. Cooperation activities are present in almost all fields of scientific research and majors of VNUHCM.

Through effective cooperation activities, VNUHCM has attracted resources in financial, human, equipment, learning resources to serve the training, scientific research, strengthen infrastructure, creating added values for teaching and training activities, scientific research, student and staff mobility, …

VNUHCM has a relatively comprehensive system of laboratories to meets the scientific research requirement of staff, lecturers and students. Also, VNUHCM is focusing on developing strong research groups and Center of Excellence to approaches regional and world level of international scientific research.

With more than 20 years of experience in implementing many international projects with leading scientists forces, VNUHCM is actively seeking for collaboration in international projects development. VNUHCM's international projects have diverse funding sources from organizations, programs, research institutes, universities from all over the world such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Canadian International Cooperation Agency, DAAD (Germany), World Bank, US Air Force Global Research Fund, British Council, Francophone University Foundation (AUF), European Commission, Italian Government, etc.
