The theme Health Science encompass topics: oxygen and carbon dioxide transport and exchange, control of respiration, aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, classes of nutrients, basal metabolic rate, body mass index, physiological effects of fasting and starvation, iron deficiency anaemia, water and electrolyte balance and imbalance due to vomiting and diarrhoea, renal control of water and electrolytes, renal failure, pH balance, metabolic alkalosis and acidosis, glucose metabolism and diabetes, nuclear and cell divisions, genetic disorders, thalassaemia, Down's syndrome, undifferentiated, unregulated cell division, tumour formation, infection and defence. The patient’s care theme focuses on communication and clinical skills associated with the topics aforementioned. The theme Our Community and Personal and Professional Development focuses on issues of Public Health, Healthcare system, Health Promotion, Law and Bioethics in the field of medicine and nursing, which are aligned to the relevant topics covered. Added value topics which include research methodologies and critical appraisal, IT skills and time management are also exploited.
