Course Title  Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics
Course Code  HB 2214
Credit  4
Semester Offered  1
Duration of Courses
Degree  Undergraduate
Programme  Bachelor of Health Science
Course Description  The molecular cell biology part of the module will examine molecular and mechanistic aspects of cell biology. Topics include: biological membranes and cellular organisation, cellular communication to include both intracellular and intercellular signaling as well as details of the cell cycle and membrane trafficking. The genetics part of the module will review structure of nucleic acids, organisation of chromosomes, classical genetics of Mendelian inheritance, genetic diseases and genetic linkage and chromosome mapping. Students will also cover molecular genetics that include DNA replication and recombination, mechanisms of mutation and DNA repair, control of gene expression and regulation. Topics of genetic engineering, genomics, population genetics, evolution, pedigree analysis will also be introduced. Laboratory sessions will be taught using techniques commonly employed in cell biology and genetics.
