Course Description  This is a fully integrated course with four main curricular themes (i.e. Health Sciences; Our Community; Patient Care; Personal and Professional Development) with an emphasis on the chemistry of life. Some content will therefore be revisited as they will apply to more than one theme. Under the theme of Health Science (which comprises 50% of the course content), the following topics will be covered: students will learn about oxygen and carbon dioxide transport and exchange, control of respiration, aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, classes of nutrients, basal metabolic rate, body mass index, physiological effects of fasting and starvation, iron deficiency, anaemia, water and electrolyte balance, and imbalance due to vomiting and diarrhoea, renal control of water and electrolytes, renal failure, pH balance, metabolic alkalosis and acidosis, glucose metabolism and diabetes, nuclear and cell divisions, genetic disorders, thalassaemia, Down's syndrome, undifferentiated, unregulated cell division, tumour formation, infection and defence. The theme of Patient Care (which comprises 25% of the course content), will focus on communication and clinical skills associated with the topics covered under the theme of Health Science. The two themes of Our Community and Personal and Professional Development together comprise 25% of the course content. The theme of Our Community will focus on issues of Public Health, Healthcare System and Health Promotion associated with the topics covered under the theme of Health Science; while the theme of Personal and Professional Development will focus on issues of law and ethics in the field of medicine; research methodologies and critical appraisal; and IT skills and time management in medicine.
