Course Description |
This is an integrated course with four main curricular themes (i.e. Health Sciences, Our Community, Patient Care and Personal and Professional Development) centered on the Blood and Endocrine systems of the body.
Under Health Sciences, the following topics will be covered: the origin, composition and functions of blood; haematological diseases; immune responses against different types of pathogens and the mechanisms that lead to diseases including in pregnancy; the development of immunity in the fetus and child; molecular carcinogenesis and tumour immunology; the anatomy of the lymphoid system, cytokines and chemokines; blood transfusion and transplantation antigens; immunosuppression and immunotherapy; the structure and the regulation of hormone synthesis; hormone receptors and signal transduction; immune-endocrine interactions; endocrine disorders; the study of major endocrine glands; the principles behind clinical assessment of endocrine function and presentation of endocrine diseases.
The theme of Patient Care will focus on communication and clinical skills associated with the topics covered under Health Sciences. Our Community will focus on issues of Public Health, Healthcare System, and Health Promotion associated with the topics covered under Health Sciences including preventive medicine aspects at the individual and community levels, surveillance, screening, control of infection and immunization programs. Personal and Professional Development will focus on issues of law and ethics in the field of medicine, research methodologies and critical appraisal, and IT skills and time management in medicine.
