Course Description  This module will study the practice of popular fiction writing in Britain and North America from the eighteenth century to the present day through the reading of selected works of popular fiction and of critical writing about popular fiction. It will consider the genres of detective fiction, horror stories, science fiction, thrillers, and romance. It will investigate the typical textual features of these literary genres, and consider their place within the cultural setting in which they arose. It will also provide students with the opportunity to engage in some popular fiction writing of their own within a chosen genre.
