Course Description |
This module explores how marriage, kinship, descent and gender are culturally constructed in different societies. The principal, though not exclusive focus is on Asian societies and students are encouraged to research Asian materials for their semester research paper. The module begins with a brief introduction to anthropology's special interest in and contribution to the study of kinship and marriage systems. Following this, the three major components of the module are (i) marriage and family systems in cross-cultural perspective; (ii) systems of kinship and descent; and (iii) cross-cultural perspectives on gender.
