Course Description  For this module students explore the cultures and environments of the Southeast Asian realm where an increasing diversity of regions, places and landscapes meet, overlap and/or merge. The realm includes the states of Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The module also examines interactions between people and environment at various geographical scales. Emphasis is on the historical and spatial development of ASEAN and whether it can accommodate the region’s cultural and political diversity and on inter-regionalism particularly as it relates to colonialism, industrialization, mobilities and migration, urbanization and international trade.
