Course Description  This module examines the forms and functions of differentiation and inequality in those societies where people are divided into strata on the basis of unequal access to wealth, status and power. Systems of social stratification based on slavery, estates, castes, classes, age, gender and ethnicity are surveyed. The module examines some of the theories of social stratification, e.g. those of Marx, Weber, Wright and Parkin, and, with particular reference to the Indian caste system, those of Srinivas, Dumont and Berreman. The module examines the phenomenon of social stratification in several different societies, particularly - but not exclusively -within Asia (especially South and Southeast Asia).
