Course Description |
This course examines the collapse of the British and French empires in the 20th century. It will consider key questions in the history of decolonization such as why the retreat from empire was more violent in some countries than others and what political, economic, military and strategic considerations were involved. In addition to the European perspective the course will seek to understand the growth of nationalist movements in Africa and Asia focusing in particular on one of the largest – the Indian nationalist movement.
