Course Description  The skills of writing effective academic essays are central to all university modules and acquiring these skills is therefore critical for maximizing students’ performance in their fields of study. This module covers the purpose of writing academic essays (including the different types of essays and overview and structure of an academic essay); paragraph structure (to include topic sentences, introduction and conclusion, and coherence and cohesion within and between paragraphs); and developing ideas (which includes formulation of the central idea, using reasons to support an idea/opinion, and counter-argument and refutation). It also covers working with sources (including interpreting data/facts for support or opposition of an idea/opinion, documenting sources/citations, and referencing); as well as academic language (which will include clarity and writing style, use of language to introduce facts/ideas/opinions and to give reasons, and editing, proof reading and peer evaluation). Students will be directed to resource a topic in their own discipline to maximize the gains from this module.
