Course Description  This module focuses on the major developments in English literature during the 18th and 19th centuries. Specific historical, cultural and social contexts of the texts will be emphasized, along with the key literary movements (Romanticism, Gothicism, Decadence, etc) which contributed to the evolution of artistic ideas, styles, themes and language during this period. This module also looks at the effects of the movements on the popular imagination of its time. The canonical works by famous Romantic poets and writers (William Wordsworth, John Keats, Mary Shelley, etc.), Victorian novelists (Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy, etc.) and the writers of the Decadent movement (Oscar Wilde, Henry James, etc.) will be covered.
