Course Description |
This module focuses on the poetry, fiction and drama of the twentieth century, a period of great innovation, diversity, and eclecticism in the arts. It will engage students in detailed study of key works of the turn-of-the-century period, of the First World War years, of modernist writing, of the Jazz Age and the Harlem Renaissance, among others. In addition, key works of British and American poetry, fiction, and drama from the different post-war decades will also be studied. The course will also discuss postmodernist and feminist influences on modern literature, and the divergent paths taken by British and American postwar literature. The course will also explore the wider historical, cultural and social contexts within which the selected texts came into being.
