Course Description  The aim of the cartographic component of the module is to introduce students to the fundamental principles of map design. The major objective is to develop the students’ awareness, capabilities and skills of map making with particular attention to the Internet-based mapping standards and procedures. The aim of the map analysis component of the module is for students to appreciate maps at various scales as information banks. A second related aim is to teach students the techniques involved so that they can understand and interpret the mapped environment. By the end of the module, students who take this module will be able to; appreciate maps as sources of information that can be used for many purposes; carry out basic analysis of map features; measure the quantity and spatial distribution of features; and understand that maps can be used to generate hypotheses that lead to a better understanding of spatial distribution.
