Course Description |
This module covers the history of East Asia with a focus on China and its influence on the
culture, society and politics of her neighbours in Japan, on the Korean peninsula, as well as in
Central Asia. At its core are the histories of state-building in China and Japan

The significance of early East Asian states: Korea, Japan, Vietnam; international trade on the
continental and maritime Silk Roads; the adaptation of the Chinese cultural model in Korea
and Japan; the modification of the Chinese cultural model in Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
Special emphasis will be given to the emancipation of Japan and the Korean states from
Chinese influence, the role of international trade between China, Southeast Asia and Central
Asia and the development of state and empire.
